SIM Cards, eSIMs, and WiFi in Bali
Telkomsel vs XL Axiata, eSIM options that work on arrival, and real cost breakdowns.
Local SIM — Telkomsel
Best coverage in Bali, including the hills and boat crossings. Airport kiosks are priced for tourists — expect IDR 200–300k for a 30-day, 25GB plan. Same SIM at a BTS-branded shop in town costs IDR 100k.
Local SIM — XL Axiata
Cheaper plans, slightly spottier coverage in remote areas but fine everywhere a guest usually goes. Good enough for most visitors.
eSIM (the easy path)
Airalo, Nomad, and Holafly all sell Indonesia or Asia eSIMs that activate on arrival. Expect US$10–20 for 7–15 GB. No queue at the airport. Check your phone supports eSIM before trusting this option.
Hotel WiFi
Generally adequate at 3-star and above. Villas in the rice-terrace areas can be flaky — ask the villa before booking if you need to work from there.
Public WiFi
Cafés almost always offer WiFi with the bill; just ask for the password. Avoid public WiFi for banking.
